On this very day, 93000 Pakistani troops did surrender in front of the Indian Army and accepted their defeat and India’s victory. This victory has been unparalleled and unique due to the fact that it was a significant secession of East Pakistan in Bangladesh.

The end of this fourteen-day war resulted in the unconditional and unilateral surrender of the Pakistan Army. Due to the secession of East Pakistan in Bangladesh, it is a big day for Bangladesh as well.

Due to the tremendous victory of Indian troops over Pakistan, this war being the first after World War II, the day of December 16 is marked as Vijay Diwas throughout the country. In Bangladesh, it is celebrated as Bijoy Dibos. Every year, on this day, senior officials, war veterans, citizens, and students commemorate the sacrifices of our devoted soldiers and pay the heartiest tributes to the martyrs who lost their precious lives while fighting with all of their capacity and bravery against Pakistani troops to liberate Bangladesh from Pakistan.

  • It was one amongst the shortest wars in the history of India. This war between India and Pakistan began on the very date of December 16, 1971, and continued for 14 days. And the surrender it involved was one of the biggest surrenders and always remembered throughout the history of the nation.

  • After winning the war, a delegation of 58 freedom fighters (Mukti Joddhas) as well as serving officers reached Kolkata, being called on the invitation of the Eastern Command to incorporate in the Vijay Diwas celebrations on December 16. Since then, the day gets celebrated as Vijay Diwas throughout the country.
